Coffee research station giving electricity to villagers

The Robusta Coffee Research Station in Madang is providing electricity to more than 1000 people at the remote Omuru sub-station in South Ambenob.
Power is being provided by a 200-kilovolt diesel generator installed at the centre by the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) Limited.
CIC administration manager Jackson Pepeto asked the villagers to “look after the facilities for your children to have extra quality time in the evening to study to do their homework under bright lights”.
“This is for you,” he said. “Look after it. You can also charge your mobile phones and things like that.”
Omuru station is about 25km from Madang town.
CIC chief executive Charles Dambu said CIC would renovate the Omuru sub-station and repair the three staff houses.
CIC will construct a four-bedroom house, an office and a storeroom for staff.
