COFFEY International Development has come on board to support the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society in its fight against breast cancer by giving K27,807.
Speaking last Friday at its office at Waigani, team leader of the incentive fund Paul Constable said they were proud to be supporting the cancer society in its efforts to promote greater awareness.
He said understanding the need for financial support, Team Coffey, under its Coffey Global Quest banner, supported five of its female employees by raising funds to help promote the cancer society’s work.
The women took part in the “Use Your Voice Campaign” and walked the Kokoda Track to promote breast cancer awareness and advocate against all forms of family and sexual violence with the support of Getaway Trekking and the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society.
Laura Davison, of the cancer society, said she was overwhelmed with the support from sponsors and everyone that had helped to support them and thanked Team Coffey for the donation.
The money will go towards buying much-needed prosthetics for breast cancer patients, medical supplies and equipment for the cancer ward at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Coffey International Development, under its Global Quest, raised K9,202.10 through raffles, barbecue, a quiz night and a K200 donation.
As part of Global Quest’s policy of “Two for one dollar raised”, they raised K18,606.20.
Programme officer with the incentive fund Kathleen Tokilivila said walking the track was not only an achievement for them but “to us it was sharing the experience of a cancer sufferer”.
She said they hoped that by taking part in the walk, they had raised awareness among women and men on the risks and were able to help them help themselves by going for checks in order to receive treatment.
Team member Janice Bran said a positive and unexpected outcome of the initiative was the enthusiasm and support by porters and carriers in conveying their message about breast cancer, cervical cancer and domestic violence in the community.
Bran thanked all sponsors and their families and friends, Getaway Trekking and the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society for the supporting the walk.
