A LOCAL training college based in Lae, has started providing free driver training courses to youths in the city.
Asia Pacific Training College started free driving training courses which attracted interest from youths last week.
College director and founder Ps Fabian Peter said the programme which would be run for 10 months was open to any interested individual.
“The youths will be grouped into five batches with one batch each to run their driving programme over two months,” he said.
“We’ve got 500 coordinators with 30 cars and 30 driving instructors.
“We’ve got three coordinating centres which are at the college grounds at Kamkumung, Tent City and Butibam Market.”
Ps Peter said the programme was free of charge and aimed to teach youth an important skill they could use to find employment.
All individuals who complete the course will be given a driver’s licence.
“Any companies or individuals who want to support this programme and reduce crime in Lae can contact us,” Ps Peter said.
“You can help us with vests, fuel, cars, and uniforms or in cash as this is a crime reduction programme and we need everyone’s help.”
He said those who completed the course would be put on a further one-year skills training programme.
The students who attended the driving courses said they were privileged to be given such training without spending anything. They thanked Ps Peter for the initiative.
