A COLLEGE in Port Moresby has started online lessons for students who are forced to stay at home because of the Covid-19 state of emergency orders.
All schools and tertiary institutions are on extended first term holidays and are scheduled to reopen on April 27.
In the meantime, the Kopkop College in Gerehu has introduced online lessons through the online platform Moodle which students can access at home.
“The Moodle is created to ensure continuity in their learning during the extended lockdown,” said the college’s director support service Petra Buskens.
Moodle is a learning platform designed to provide educators, administrators and learners with a robust, secure and integrated system to create personalised learning environments.
The Kopkop College information technology team designed the Moodle which came into effect from last Friday.
Kopkop students from pre-prep to Grade 12 can access their subject materials and assignments there.
They can also communicate with their teachers.
“Lessons for students from pre-prep to Grade 12, and assessments will be delivered through the Moodle.
“Parents and students can provide their feedback on their courses.
“They are encouraged to contact our administration team and IT team or principal should they have any issues.”
Education Minister Joseph Yopyyopy said earlier that the department would be looking at ways to continue classes online for students on holidays.

  • The head of this institution thinks that learning is more important than life.

  • Thank you Kokopo College for being proactive. It would be academically non viable to continue classes after dispensing classes for 70 straight working days.

At least Kopkop can guarantee continuity of classes come 27/04/20.

Well done. For the of the schoolsvin the country, the only option they have is to terminate all academic programs until 2021.

Would be a big joke if they resume

  • Ok, who will be the responsible to pay bill of the online lessons, interm’s of data.?
Online for grade 12 school lives in previous year we student we responsible for the bill.
So if the department of education will responsible for the bill rather than parent..

  • We will not loose anything if we stick to the rules and wait for government notification. All schools in PNG from early childhood to universities are very vulnerable to this coronavirus. SUSPEND ALL CLASSES AND STAY HOME. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURING. More so,
internet services in the country is very poor thus, not a reliable source for learning at this stage.

  • Congratulations KopKop College. This is a way forward. Its time all tertiary institutions should emphasis on online learning through moodle. But I do have few questions. Who is paying for the data bundles? Is it the school, Government or the individuals?..

  • Would be better , cancell all Schools and wait for govenrments next plan, Proper for all schools naton wide to be on the same phase of learning, not everyone has acess to internet, TV even electricity. Education will still be here but we have only one life.

  • May be the sickness is also impacted by the electronic waves, so slow down. even if universities and colleges are closed, where can grade 12 pass out and go to.
