Time to celebrate
Happy 44th Independence Day PNG. Give yourself a pat on the back for how you have progressed so far. Some may call it slow, some say it’s sluggish with the two-steps-forward-and-one step-back expression. Put it this way: Our development is better as an evolution than a revolution.
Three options
The people of Bougainville know of the two options they have in the referendum: independence or greater autonomy. There is a third one however, according to a senior government official. But it remains a secret.
Risky crossing
The pedestrian crossing outside the Ted Diro School in Hohola, Port Moresby is a death trap, especially in the mid-afternoon rush when school children go home. Police traffic officers need to be there to monitor the movement of people including children across the busy road. Let’s not wait for someone to get killed before taking action.
Healthy worker
The trade union for public servants has rightfully reminded its members of the need to be fit and healthy. Productivity runs parallel with a healthy and happy workforce. In fact, public servants should be allocated a few hours on an afternoon during the week to partake in sports or fitness activities. It’s a win-win situation for the worker and employer.
Fire hydrants
Apec has come and gone but people in Port Moresby are yet to see the fire hydrants they were told would appear on the major thoroughfares and highways. City Hall and Fire Chief Roo need to have another sit-down.
Quick arrest
Police in Lae have arrested a contractor they allege had failed to carry out maintenance work on one of their barracks in East Taraka. On-the-spot arrest.
