Come support our teams
Hello to all our friends and families in Papua New Guinea and overseas. Welcome to the 34th edition of Coach’s Corner in your favourite rugby league newspaper — The National.
A big thanks to the PNG community and friends from New Zealand and Australia for their hospitality and support during our stay in Christchurch.
We were humbled by your kindness and especially the powhiri — a traditional welcome by the elders.
That was touching. We are really grateful and the team will treasure those memories and the experiences.
It’s also an inspiration and motivation to those young boys, who dream of playing for the Kumuls, to work hard.
These are privileges, rewards and a once-in-a-lifetime honour you can enjoy at this level.
The result of the game against the Fiji Bati was disappointing.
We have reviewed and analysed what we did wrong and are working on them for this weekend’s game against the Great Britain Lions.
The Lions want to end their tour on a winning note. We want to erase memories of last week’s loss and win in front of our home fans.
This will be the last international game for both teams so it will be an exciting test.
As they say — save the best for last — so both teams will be in their prime.
Our Oil Search PNG Orchids take on England Women in the second of their two-test series at the National Football Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
A big thanks to Simon Sia, Janet Gimots and the organising committee for their wonderful hospitality. I am told there was a big crowd at the National Sports Institute in Goroka.
I got a video of the game and we went through it with the women last night on where and what we can do to correct some areas. We all learn from our mistakes and the Orchids will put on an improved performance on Saturday.
Those of you in Port Moresby, please come support the Kumuls and Orchids on Saturday.
We will really appreciate your support.
Until next week, play hard, safe and by the rules in whatever sport you are competing in.
Reminder to those watching or supporting, please remember that there is no room for violence in any sport and the community.
Cheers,
Mikz
