ACTING Eastern Highlands police commander Supt Michael Welly is waiting for new instructions from Police Commissioner David Manning whether to revert to his position as commander Northern or remain in Eastern Highlands.
“I am currently in Port Moresby attending to family matters but remain as acting police commander (for) Eastern Highlands until further instructions from the commissioner,” he told The National.
Supt Welly said the last instruction he received from Manning was to go to Eastern Highlands as the commander.
“There are instances where during such occasions (elections), there are allegations of misconduct by our personnel during the polling and counting but in the by-election, (they) all have behaved very well and worked within the confines of the election process,” he said. “This shows some respect for all of you.”
He said the provincial command will now have some knowledge and understanding to prepare and plan for the national elections in 2022.
Manning appointed Supt Welly as acting police commander for Eastern Highlands to oversee the Goroka by-election and allowed incumbent commander Supt David Seine to step aside.
Assistant Comm of Police Northern command Peter Guiness and his deputy commended Supt Welly and the policemen and women from Goroka, Morobe command, Lae Metropolitan and Mobile Squad 15 from Wau for an excellent security during the by-election.
