THE Public Service Commission has welcomed a court ruling to take back the powers of the appointment of senior public servants from Cabinet.
“The PSC is a constitutional office that has the mandate to screen and appoint qualified persons upon merit, but those powers had been removed and given to the Cabinet in 2014. The court’s decision came in our favour as these powers are now restored,” acting chairman Dr Philip Kereme said.
“The PSC provides check and balance to make sure that people appointed in those higher offices have the relevant qualification, experience and merit to be able to manage and lead efficiently.”
It means that now, the Government will seek the recommendation of the commission before appointing, suspending or terminating senior public servants.
They include department heads, provincial administrators and heads of statutory regulatory authorities.
