THE Constitutional Law Reform Commission is carrying out a consultative process on the review of laws on city planning and urban development.
As part of the process, the Constitutional Law Reform Commission (CLRC) went live on FM 100 yesterday to grasp the views of the public.
During the FM 100 Talkback Show, CLRC commissioner Dr Fiona Hukula said a legislative review on city planning and urban development was being pursued.
The term of reference (TOR) nine is looking at the review of the laws on the city planning and urban developments, a reference from the then justice minister Kerenga Kua after the ethnic violence in Lae between the Highlanders and Morobeans.
Hukula said at the back of the clash, the TOR for the city planning and urban development law reviews came in place to assess city planning and reviews of cities.
The objective is to enquire into, and report on and record in accordance to Section 12 (2) the CLRC Act in relation to city planning and urban developments.
To consider the relevance of the City’s Act of 1971 and to what extension was the relationship between the Urban Local Level Government and the Provincial Governments Acts of 1995 and its influence on the planning of urban and city development and what effect the Informal Sector Act of 2000 had on the economy and management of cities.
Hukula said it was a big and timely issue that was affecting the country that was being raised in the media particularly the issue of the informal sector and law and order issues in urban development.
