urgent action by consumers, businesses and the Government is needed to address climate change and biodiversity loss, an official says.
Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) chief executive officer and commissioner Paulus Ain said greenhouse gases, waste and resource use in all sectors should be reduced.
Ain made the remark on World Consumer Rights Day observed yesterday in Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, and Kokopo.
He said one way of reducing waste and controlling the effects of climate change was by producing and consuming goods with more focus on sustainability.
“For consumers, sustainable consumption is about doing more with less,” he said.
“For example, switching to energy efficient products, buying more locally produced/grown food, and renting or buying second hand.
“The Government and businesses must also act to create more sustainable supply chains, taking waste and inefficiencies out of production before products get to the shops, creating the infrastructure needed for recycling and ensuring that consumers have they information they need to make informed choices.”
