A COMMITTEE is to be set up this week for death-row prisoners to appeal their sentence, Justice and Attorney-General Department secretary Dr Eric Kwa says.
“With committee, such prisoners can apply for reconsideration of their sentences,” he said.
“That is the only option for them or they will wait for execution.”
Dr Kwa said it was an option that the department wanted to establish for a long time and “we hope to get the first hearing by early next month or next year”.
“For the first time, we are developing such guidelines,” he said.
“So once we have completed the process, death row prisoners can start applying for a review of their sentences.
“After the committee members are sworn in, the committee can endorse the guidelines.”
