Communication a vital tool

Editorial

IT is common knowledge that teams that communicate, complete projects in a quicker and more efficient amount of time than others.
They are also more accurate in their work than others.
Effective communication also allows team members to understand their roles and the roles of everyone else on the team.
The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) and PNG Sports Foundation identifying communication as the bridge in preparing Team PNG for the 2023 Games in Solomon Islands, should be commended by all stakeholders and supported.
Team PNG at this year’s Pacific Games in Samoa brought home 39 gold, 57 silver and 35 bronze medals which was the highest achievement abroad so far. Team PNG has a goal of finishing first abroad. So going forward, effective communication among stakeholders and better utilisation of services and facilities are two main areas that have been identified to boost Team PNG’s Pacific Games success in the future.
Effective communication in sports is an absolute essential trait that quality teams should have to be successful, from the coaches to team leaders, all the way down to the role players.
Everybody should be on the same page.
Communication is the art of successfully sharing meaningful information with people by means of an interchange of experience and it should be clearly and effectively without hurting or offending others.
In PNG, that effective communication should now translate to the use of training facilities.
And this is where administrators come in. They (administrators) have many responsibilities in sports organisations, as they have a hand in overseeing every aspect of their organisations.
Most of these aspects involve communication, including coordinating and monitoring the coaching staff, making budgets with financial planners, interviewing prospective employees and athletes, and meeting with investors, owners, or officials.
The Government spent millions for PNG to host the 2015 Pacific Games and the facilities are there, most deteriorating due to lack of maintenance.
If our administrators are on the same page and speaking the same language, the push now will be for funding for maintenance and to maintain.
If it means hiring professionals to come in and ensure turfs, stands, buildings are maintained to world standard, so be it.
That will be part and partial of the price we should pay to succeed the 2019 records at Samoa.
A report from the National Sports Institute (NSI), during a sports workshop, shows that athletes and teams who used their facilities in Goroka had a higher success rate – with Athletics PNG (APNG) used as a case in point.
This shows that it is time to in upgrading and improving NSI.
APNG athletes who were based at NSI in the lead-up to the Games won more medals than any other sport for Team PNG in Samoa.
It should start today and not wait until two years to 2023 as highlighted by High Performance Sport PNG.
Improving communication skills is a relatively inexpensive process which can improve performance dramatically.
Communication skills are so important to success in both business and sport, and this has been demonstrated in countless studies.
Improving on the communication skills of the people in your team or business is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to develop your overall performance.
This little bit of effort can result in a massive improvement, which may become part of your competitive advantage. Don’t let it become your competitions.
