Communications seminar starts for dioceses
A social communications seminar for media coordinators of the Catholic dioceses started their programme at the Catholic Bishops Conference in Port Moresby. The seminar included a visit to The National newspaper.
Facilitator Fr Ambrose Pereira said the visit to the newspaper was to enable its participants to get a deeper understanding of the processes involved in the production of a newspaper.
Pereira is also the Catholic Bishops Conference secretary for communications and youth.
He said the visit enabled them to understand how news was gathered, edited, laid out and printed.
During the visit on Tuesday, the newspaper editor in chief Christine Pakakota spoke to participants about the news gathering process, layout and editing.
Advertising manager Dorcus Aup spoke about the advertising process before they toured the printing area.
About 15 participants from different Catholic dioceses in the country were attending the five-day conference that ends tomorrow. The participants are involved in media and communications in their dioceses. They occasionally send news items for publication to the Catholic media outlets and to other media organisations.
The dioceses of Mendi, Rabaul, Vanimo, Mt Hagen, Kimbe and Keviang were represented. Volunteers of Radio Maria also formed part of the programme.
The seminar opened up with a study discussion on the message of the Holy Father for World Communications Day, to be celebrated on Ascension Sunday, on June 2.
