Communities continue to support new high school

Education

THE newly established Lower Nebilyer Provincial High School in Western Highlands is continuing to receive much-needed support from the surrounding communities and that shows that people are starting to realise the importance of education, principal Nickson Miti says.
Miti said this after a community member from Taplga village donated a semi-permanent house for the teachers.
Miti said it was the first time for him to see people helping government institutions.
He said in some communities such donations were unseen of but the people of Hap Wara have been contributing much without waiting for the government.
He said that since last month when teachers were put off the payroll, people contributed food, diesel and cash to support the school, and the support was continuing.
Miti said the house was donated by Tony Dupai a grade 10 student from the school.
“For me this is something unusual to see a student and his family members donating a house to the school,” the headmaster said.
“This is the first of its kind because these people have been involved in tribal fighting since 1970s and they found that they have missed out on education and that is why they are coming good without expecting something in return.”
Miti said the people believed that what they were investing now was for their children’s future.
He said his vision and plans for the school now was to look at conducting the first grade 10 national examinations with the graduation.
Miti said he would also focus on building more staff houses, complete the incomplete classrooms and build a staff complex.
He said since the community was supporting the school, his task now was to extend and give the best to the people.
“I will need the government support to carry out my dreams and visions for the school and that is through the tuition fee free and other form of support,” Miti said.
He said Governor Paias Wingti has a dream in education by building more high and secondary schools in the province.
Miti said Lower Nebilyer is one out of the 26 high and secondary schools built by Wingti.
Miti is confident that the governor will continue to support to ensure education becomes priority agenda.
Miti thanked the community at Hap Wara for their continued support to the school and the students.
