PEOPLE living near the Jackson International Airport in the Port Moresby North-East electorate are finally getting water after 11 years – since they settled there.
The water project was initiated by local MP John Kaupa with an initial payment of K1 million to Eda Ranu.
It is part of a K4 million earmarked for water rehabilitation and construction of new water facilities to all settlements in Moresby North-East electorate.
The project was commissioned by vice-minister for national planning and Tewai-Siassi MP Dr Kobby Bomareo on Sunday.
“Water is a necessity to life, we are all entitled to it.
“Irrespective of where you live, we all need water. We will connect water to all new settlements first then rehabilitate existing water services in all settlements and Motu-Koitabuan villages,” he said
“Our district development authority has allocated K2million and the Office of NCD Governor Powes Parkop has committed another K2million.
“We will have K4million to bring water to our people living in Fareya, Bush Wara, ATS, 8-Mile, 9-Mile, and Wildlife.
“Now we are opening the Manuti, Japanese settlers’ new water project.
“In the next few weeks Eda Ranu will continue to the second destination starting with Fareya.
“I thank the customary landowners who are working with us to ensure their land is properly acquired and they do not miss out on the benefits it generates.
“Almost K500,000 are expended for these two settlements’ water project and as funding is available, we will bring water, electricity and build proper roads to all settlements in Moresby North-East.
“As part of our urbanisation programme, we are surveying all settlements and in consultation with customary landowners so they benefit from their land.”
The National Planning Department will assist with some funding through its Wash programme.
