A COMMUNITY leader has expressed concern about the deteriorating state of the roads in the Moresby North West electorate.
Reform Ministries and ex-convict network president Brian Walters said roads there did not look like city roads.
“I’m wondering whether North West MP Sir Mekere Morauta or National Capital District Commission officers ever live in this electorate. Do they ever travel these roads? Because if they do, then they should have fixed up these roads,” he said.
“These roads need to be upgraded as the city’s workforce that lives in the North West suburbs commute to and from their respective offices daily to work and contribute to the national economy.
“The Somare Crescent back road is an embarrassment. This road leads to the Parliament, National Court, National Development Bank, Census office, Telikom and departments like the Prime Minister’s office, Foreign Affairs, Education, Inter-Governmental Relations, Personnel Management, Attorney-General and Environment and Conservation. Senior public servants used this road.”
Walters said the recent footpath project along the main road that Sir Mekere had initiated in his electorate “is a very poor decision”.
“While I applaud Sir Mekere’s action to engage the youths to build this project, it is a short-term benefit as these footpaths will easily be removed in the near future.
“It will be removed to expand the road to cater for the increasing volume of cars. What Sir Mekere should have done is to engage the youths to patch up the huge crater-like potholes.”
Walters said the Baruni back road from Gerehu to town should have been upgraded to ease traffic jams on Waigani Drive.
“This road must be upgraded to allow Gerehu and Waigani residents’ shortcuts to town. The improved road will enable churches and government to provide services like education, health, water and sanitation to help improve the people’s lives. Currently these people are being neglected and they feed on rubbish from the dump.”
