FIFTEEN community police officers from the Momase region underwent a three-day electoral governance training in Madang last week to learn what their role is during the election period.
Programme facilitator Peter Torot said the police were the key planners in ensuring a smooth general election in the country.
The Training of Trainers workshop covered issues such as the code of ethics and conduct, good governance, illegal behaviour during enrolment and polling, the electoral roll, overview of the limited preferential voting system and cross-over issues such as gender, HIV/AIDS, disability and anti-fraud.
Torot said the training was
vital for them because understanding electoral issues “will help
them promote a free, fair and
safe election process”.
The training, organised by the Electoral Commission under its electoral support programme, started last Monday and ended on Wednesday. There were speakers from the Electoral Commission, Transparency International, Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, churches and community service organisations.
