MOBILE phone communication from Agaun, in Milne Bay, was launched on Sunday thanks to Alotau MP and National Plannning Minister Charles Abel and Digicel PNG.
With financial assistance from Abel, Digicel erected a transmission station at Agaun and people were able to communicate from there on Sunday.
The magic of communication was underscored when a woman spoke to her daughter in Alotau for the first time in six years, via mobile.
“I am taking this collaborative approach with Digicel to strengthen the operations of public administrations, schools and health centre in the district using communication services,” Abel said.
Digicel is very thankful to the minister for his support.
He committed K1 million to the programme this year and a further K1 million next year.
Daga local level government president Sylvester Gwarimia commended Abel’s partnership with Digicel PNG for making communication services accessible to the people of Agaun.
“Thanks to the minister, Digicel switched on a bright light in Agaun,” Gwarimia said.
The partnership plans to introduce tablets into four high schools for online researches and learning, with TV and radio too being in the pipeline, Abel said.
