PORT Moresby Netball Association competition leaders Telstars won 66-56 despite being pushed all the way by a gallant Veupunama outfit in round seven at the Rita Flynn Indoor Complex on Saturday.
Telstars remain unbeaten with Sparrows in the seven-team premier division.
These two teams have taken an early lead in the competition with the Mermaids and Rebels all looking to solidify their top-four spots.
The round eight the match to watch is between Telstars and reigning premiers Sparrows.
The match started at a fast pace as Telstars picked up the momentum but Veupunama matched them and maintained their composure.
Telstars Gamini Koroka (captain), Philomena Naime, Kimberly Alex, Boio Peter, Athalia Kila and Evanelliah Aua took on Veupunama’s Talima Gulo- Vui, Barbara Arivusu, Rebecca Joseph, Ravu Noka, Daisy Vali, Villie Nopiri and Ruth Tokau.
The intensity of the match also affected both sides’ attack as poor ball control, handling and turn-overs began to creep in.
There was no patience in the challenge as both sides were playing from coast to coast.
Veupunama, who are improving with every round, are a warning to the top teams like Sparrows and Mermaids not to underestimate them this season.
Veupunama’s performance indicated that the team had improved and developed under the guidance of former PNG Pepes coach Margaret Opina.
Meanwhile, with their big guns firing on all cylinders, Sparrows beat the Rebels 46-30.
The clash between the Mermaids and Aroma Coast Plus has been deferred to a later date.
