TRAFFIC police in Port Moresby are urging companies providing transportation for staff to use suitable vehicles to avoid overloading.
This came about following road checks conducted at various parts of the city for unregistered and un-roadworthy vehicles.
The officer in charge of Boroko Traffic Police, Joseph Salle, said: “The road checks have effectively started and will continue until the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ends with the Leaders’ Summit in November,”
He said traffic officers were checking vehicles for overloading, unlicensed drivers and road-safety issues which might trigger road accidents and loss of innocent lives.
Salle said that it did not look good when vehicles or PMV buses overloaded with passengers were travelling to and from the city as people from other countries were here for Apec meetings.
“If unregistered PMV buses or vehicles are involved in an accident, then the victims will not be covered by motor vehicle insurance,” he said.
Salle said police had already arrested several drivers for overloading and unlicensed buses.
