Competition focuses on harnessing power of art

A NATIONWIDE art competition will be opened next month for contemporary artists.
The Timothy Akis and Georgina Beier National Art Prize was a competition aimed at harnessing the power of art as a therapeutic device, tool for cultural preservation, instrument to effect social change and help the economic empowerment of Papua New Guinea.
Grass Skirt arts head Lani Auvita Scott, said the Grass Skirt Project had partnered with 10 artists selected from all around the country to assist in the month-long competition.
The National Art Prize will present 22 winners from two categories, youth (between 6-18 years old) and open (18 and over) and if they win, their artwork would be put on a team jersey in the Hevea Cup.
Application forms will open for two months, starting Saturday and closing on August 1, and winners would be announce in September 1.
To enter the competition, participants are required to send a picture of their original artwork, a picture of themselves, a short story about the artwork and contact details to Grass Skirt Project via Facebook, Instagram or the Grass Skirt Project website.
