POLICE in Madang have refused to accept a request from a man to pay compensation to a girl who he allegedly attempted to rape inside his home.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said Abraham Yama, 29, of Snowpass, Usino-Bundi in Madang, was arrested and charged with one count of attempted rape and one count of deprivation of liberty yesterday.
He said Yama allegedly after getting drunk saw the girl who was on her way to the market, and gave her K10 to buy him cigarette.
When the girl brought back the cigarette, she saw two men standing at the house and told them to take the cigarette.
But they told her to take it to him herself. Supt Rubiang said when the girl took the cigarette to Yama, he allegedly dragged her into his room, locked the door and tried to rape her.
He said the girl struggled to escape but couldn’t so she farted, leading Yama to think that she had excreted waste.
“He was not happy and told the girl to sleep,” Supt Rubiang said.
“He went out to fetch water and come back to wash the girl, (telling her) that after washing her, he will rape her.” But while he was out, the girl escaped through the window.
The matter was reported to police who arrested Yama on Tuesday.
Police detained him in the cell at Jomba.
He was formally charged yesterday. The other man who told her to take the cigarette herself to Yama was also arrested and charged.
Supt Rubiang said mediation in such cases would stop and thanked his officers for arresting and charging Yama.

Thanks Supt. Rubiang. Thats the way to go. A line needs to be drawn for compensation. People with money will continue to do this because they have the money to compensate. Imprison them. Women should not be treated like this.
That’s great. Our country has gone from bad to worse in terms of rapes in particular and its association with alcohol, home brew beer and drug. Mediation our of court is indirectly encouraging more social problems in our societies. Cases that warrant death penalty like rape should be made. When this is done, people would be careful in their behavior and treatment to others, our societies would become a better place to prosper going forward.
Well done. Compromising with compensation payment must stop and come to the end.
Well done. Compromising with compensation payment must come to the end. Give them 10 years each so that they can repent in the jail.
The culprit can keep his money but let him enjoy his time in the prison
Apply full force of the law, not compensation. Compensation payment should not be entertained in serious case like this as it might become precedent where others will be taking advantage on it in the future.
