Computer library to improve education standards: MP

PAPUA New Guinea’s future is in the hands of new generation and education will equip them with the skills and knowledge to take the country forward, Maprik MP John Simon says.
Simon, who is Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, made the remarks when opening a new computer library for Maprik Secondary School last week.
The new computer lab is equipped with 40 laptops for grade 11 and 12 students.
Simon said it was a worthwhile investment to improve education standards at the school and in the district.
He said he had visited the school last year and asked the students what they needed at their school and they had told him that access to the internet and computers for research was top on their list.
This prompted him to acquire funds from the government and invest K200,000 to build and equip the computer lab.
Simon, who is a former student of the school, said he was concerned that students at one of the district’s main secondary schools did not have access to information and communication technology and wanted to make it available to them.
Maprik Secondary School caters for 1,024 students and only acquired secondary status in 2010.
Principal Alfred Akai thanked Simon for his commitment to the school. Department of Agriculture and Livestock secretary Daniel Kombuk, who accompanied Simon to the school, committed K10,000 to install an agriculture programme so students could learn about agriculture.

  • All Secondary schools in the country must have computers in their libraries and it’s not the case.
This is a very good initiative by John Simon.
Thumps up for the concern the MP has for his people.
