Concern for barracks being used as shortcut

FAMILIES living in a police barracks in Port Moresby are concerned about their safety because people are using the compound as a shortcut to reach the bus stop and market.
Sergeant Jeffery Kiandu said street vendors were also using the area to sell food and store items.
“It is getting out of control. There is no proper fencing to keep outsiders out. Women from the market are slowly moving into the yard,” he said.
The families of the officers have no privacy because people can look into and access their homes.
The officers called on Police Commissioner Gari Baki to visit the barracks and the compound himself and see how the families are living in fear for their security.
Kiandu said their superiors were turning a blind eye to the problem the officers and their families were facing at the barracks.
He said the officers investigating high-profile cases were exposed to criminal elements who might want to harm their families.
