Concern over dynamite fishing

THE Water Police Directorate is set to discuss the issue of dynamite fishing with the National Fishing Authority (NFA) to address the issue as it had a devastating impact on the marine environment.
Director chief Supt Trevor Lapu said locals were now involved in the careless practice as an easy means of catching fish but instead were causing harm to the marine environment as the explosives destroyed coral reefs.
He said maritime safety meant a lot of things, life at sea, food security at sea and the safety of people and vessels travelling at sea and dynamiting was becoming a concern to marine security.
He said police had attended to such cases but when they arrived at the locations the suspects were already gone.
“It is already affecting the maritime environment,” he said.
“We really need to do more work on how the dynamites are coming in.”
