Concern over likely Covid surge

THE Port Moresby General Hospital has fewer Coronavirus (Covid-19) patients but is concerned about a possible fourth surge, a doctor says.
The hospital’s director of medical service Dr Kone Sobi said positive Covid-19 cases numbers had been steady since last month, with not more than 10 patients in the ward any single day.
He said there were nine patients at the ward on Thursday.
“Six were adults with comorbidities,” he said.
“One is a child about six months old with recurrent chest infection and is stable.
“Two were with brain injuries who had surgery earlier in the week and remained on the ventilator over the past few days because of the severe head injuries.
“They were tested for the Covid-19 as a standard protocol for intensive care unit patients and both returned positive results.
“So we are managing as best as we can but we are not out of the woods just yet.
“Let us all maintain vigilance and the simple measures, including vaccination.
“With all the gatherings during Christmas and New Year periods and what was happening in Australia was a cause for concern for a surge.”
