Concerns over restrictions

MOTU fishermen are feeling the effects of the restrictions to their movements imposed for Apec.
Kopi Vere, of Fishermen Island, said they could not move freely about to fish and take their catch to the market.
“The quality of our catch has been affected because it takes us almost an hour to reach the market,” Vere said.
“We usually travel at 30 knots but now we are instructed to slow down and travel at 10 knots when we reach the red-zone.
“By the time we reach the market, most of our fish have gone bad affecting our price. We usually sell a string of fish for K30. Now we are selling at K15.”
Islander Kei Iga said because they took longer routes, they used up more fuel.
Joint Security Task Force media officer Sgt Joseph Sila said in a statement that there would be no total shutdown of activities by coastal villagers. But their movements will be monitored by maritime security vessels.
Sila said normal activities for Motuan villagers would continue but there would be slight changes to routes.
The restricted zones are from Apec Haus, Motukea and Central Business District.
