TWO deaths and injuries to several people in three motor vehicle accidents have been reported by the Vanimo General Hospital.

Two occurred last Thursday night and the third on Friday morning, the first time for three motor vehicle accidents in such close succession,  hospital chief executive Elias Kavapore said.

“The first incident was reported at 7.30pm. It happened at Mushu village, along the west coast of Vanimo town, when the vehicle rolled,” he said.

Kapavore said the incident resulted in two casualties with severe head injuries. Both were admitted to hospital.

“Other people in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and were treated at the outpatient and discharged,” he said.

Kapavore said the second incident, reported at 10.20pm happened along the Bewani Road. This was reportedly caused by gear and brake failures.

Kapavore said the vehicle was climbing a steep hill when the gear failed, causing the engine to stop so it rolled down and over-turned.

The third incident, reported at 6am on Friday, was a drink driving case.

The vehicle was travelling uphill when the driver experienced gear failure and his vehicle overturn.

Kapavore said two people were killed – one before arrival at the hospital and the other at the outpatient through severe head injury.

“The message of not to drink and drive has been given every time but drivers are not adhering to it.”
