CONDOMS have been going like hot cakes at the election counting centre at Momei Oval in Mendi, Southern Highlands province.
Assistant returning officer for Imbonggu Francis Akol, who has been promoting safe sex, said he would place two boxes of condoms everyday and they were gone by the afternoon.
“With a lot of people coming into the province, it is important that safe sex is practised at all times to prevent sexually-transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS,” Akol said.
The condoms were supplied by the Electoral Commission through a partnership with the National AIDS Council Secretariat.
Akol said he made sure the condoms were placed at the counting venue each morning. They have been running out each day and he had to replace the boxes each morning.
“People are realising the important of safe
sex.
“There is a huge cash flow and sex trade is likely at this time.
“So providing free condoms is the way forward to minimise the risk of sexually-transmitted diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS,” he said.
