Congrats to Goroka, East Sepik
The National, Tuesday September 8th, 2015
MY congratulations go to Goroka and East Sepik for being the only places in the nation where Futsal has an ongoing programme.
As I understand, East Sepik (through Sepik Futsal Association) has the largest number of members who run their own competitions in Wewak, Moem Barracks, Nuigo, Wewak Urban and Boikin, among others.
The Sepik association has done extremely well in keeping the programme alive since 2006.
It is sad that PNG football (soccer) still has to catch up with Solomon Islands and Fiji in this mini-soccer form of football that has helped them develop their players over the years.
It is time for PNG Football Association and its executives to wake up and enter this code into its annual programme, as well as provide financial assistance to associations in the country, as in Goroka and East Sepik, where it could start the development of young players.
For those of us who have lived outside of the country, it is always disheartening to see many Pacific nations fielding teams in international Futsal regional tournaments where PNG, the largest nation in the Pacific Islands group, is clearly absent.
We are all hoping to see a national Futsal championship hosted in Goroka or Wewak soon to promote the code which has developed the most skillful players in Brazil (like Pele, Ronaldo and Kaka) and other parts of the world.
Go Futsal!
