LAW and order problems can be reduced when young people are involved in sports, according to Imuagoro congregation chairman Lalai Vali.
He sponsored a tournament to end last year’s Christmas celebrations, where people got into their four-square groups to compete for the Chairman’s Cup and cash prizes.
In the men’s division, Recreation won 3-0 to claim the Cup and K500 while runners-up Service received K300.
In the women’s division, Education bagged the Chairman’s Cup with K500 while runners-up Service settled for K300.
Gogo Jack and Velsie Kila each received K50 and a trophy after they were named as the player of the match in the men’s and women’s finals respectively.
Vali said his other reason for sponsoring the tournament was for old people to maintain their fitness.
He said the tournament would become an annual event under his leadership as the chairman of the congregation.
“I don’t know what the next chairman’s plans are, after I vacate the post when my term expires,” Vali said.
“But I want to promote volleyball in the community through the church, so that raw talents can be exposed.
“We all know that our favourite sports are rugby league for men and netball for women, but volleyball can become a great sport if we promote it.
“We will then identify hidden talents in the sport, so that we can market them.”
