SOUTHERN Highlands Nines tournament has been given a boost with a local firm stepping in with a K50,000 sponsorship.
Tournament coordinator Terence Kapipi told The National last week that the sponsorship by Ipwenz Construction was the first of its kind for the tournament.
He said the Southern Highlands government was the only sponsor of the two-day tournament which would be held next month.
Kapipi praised the local firm as a first major sponsor apart from the provincial government.
“It’s good to see a local firm like Ipwenz giving back to its people through such a sponsorship,” he said.
“The provincial government has already committed K150,000.
“With additional support from Ipwenz, we are set to deliver the tournament.”
Representing Ipwenz Construction, project engineer Nathaniel Timothy said the company shared the same vision as the organisers of the tournament.
“Our province has been in the spotlight for law and order problems,” he said.
“We believe that the tournament is a good platform to help address those problems through rugby league.
“We want to see peace and unity in the province, and are happy to be part of the tournament.
“It’s about giving back to our people and there is no better way to do it then investing in rugby league in the province.
“We want to see youths stay away from bad habits and look after their health.
“As part of our community obligation, we have been supporting church programmes and other social activities.
“But to come on board and support rugby league in a big way, we are proud of what we are doing,” he said.
