Construction of quarantine facility gains momentum

CONSTRUCTION of Buimo prison’s coronavirus (Covid-19) quarantine facility is progressing at a faster pace after bad weather slowed work, prison commander Supt Michael Wundia says.
“Three containers brought in to be transformed into a quarantine facility has had its roofing done. Our major concern now is the fencing for the facility,” Wundia said.
He said the prison management would have to look for financial assistance to have the facility fenced up.
“After the roofing for all three containers, fencing and electrical works will follow,” he said.
The construction of the quarantine facility followed concerns that new detainees should be in quarantine and cleared of the Covid-19 before being admitted into the main prison compound.
The delay in getting the facility ready for occupation had led to issues affecting the Correctional Services and police.
Lae metropolitan commander Chief Supt Chris Kunyanban said some prisoners on remand were still held in police station lockups.
Kunyanban raised concern over the overcrowding of the police station lockups.
