THE re-election of Sir Bob Dadae as Governor-General is to maintain continuity and stability, says Prime Minister James Marape.
Marape said the ruling Pangu Pati and members of the coalition government supported the re-election of Sir Bob in Parliament yesterday.
“When our Head of State is working well, Pangu and its coalition partners gave our support to Sir Bob, because continuity and stability are very important in our head of state,” he said.
“Our Founding Fathers, who wrote the Constitution, saw that in 1975, and gave the office a six-year tenure with a constitutional provision for a second term.
“This is the highest office of our democracy, and when the incumbent’s work is without disrepute, he, as the symbolic head of our country representing our King, must continue,” he said.
Marape said despite the decision by Pangu and Coalition members to support Sir Bob, everyone was allowed to vote on conscience for the candidate of their choice.
Meanwhile, Marape congratulated and thanked losing candidates Winnie Kiap and Stephen Pokawin for putting up their names.
