Contractors to clean up debris

CONTRACTORS will clean up mud and debris after they failed to remove access soil when building a classroom at the Kaugere Primary School in Moresby South, local MP Justin Tkatchenko says.
Tkatchenko said this after a resident, Simon Yuangi, raised concern that houses on the fringes of the school had been flooded with mud debris after recent heavy rain washed down the excess soil that the contractor had not removed.
Tkatchenko said his office would address the issue and they had advised the contractor to “look into it”.
Concerned resident Yuangi said that they had told the contractor that the material left from digging the area for the construction of the new classroom could potentially be washed downhill if it was not promptly removed.
He said the recent wet period experienced in the city had caused the material to be washed down into their homes just as they had feared.
He said flooding of properties in the area was a chronic issue that happened during the wet seasons and they had been raising their concerns with the school since 2015 when the school was undergoing infrastructure developments.
Yuangi said in 2015, a new classroom was built at the school and excess soil was heaped at the edge of the school boundary on a slope.
