DIABETES is a silent killer of our working class, especially now that most people do not exercise and tend to eat a lot of processed and fatty food.
Glucose, a form of sugar in food, is converted into energy for the body.
Insulin is produced by our body to regulate the blood glucose level.
Diabetics are unable to produce insulin properly, so their blood glucose levels become too high.
Type-1 diabetes is where the pancreas do not produce enough insulin, type-2 is where cells are resistant to insulin and type-3 develops during pregnancy.
Around 90% of Australians suffer from type-2, the most common form.
Lifestyle factors like poor diet, obesity, high blood pressure, smoking and lack of exercise all increase the risk of developing type-2 diabetes.
It can often be managed initially with healthier diet and regular exercise, but it is a progressive condition and many will need medication or some will eventually need to use insulin.
