A CONVICTED murderer has admitted to raping his mother after escaping from Beon prison.
Jailed for life for wilful murder, the man pleaded guilty in the Madang National Court last Thursday to two counts of rape.
He appeared before Judge David Cannings, who had earlier sentenced him to life imprisonment for the first charge in which he raped an elderly woman and then killed her by holding her head under water in a stream.
The accused smiled to people in the court as he returned to his seat after entering his plea.
The court was told that at 9am on March 17, 2008, the man followed his biological mother to the garden in their village in Bogia.
On arriving there, he asked the mother to give him the bush knife which she handed it over.
The man attacked and assaulted her with the bush knife, forcefully removing her clothes and raped her.
The mother struggled and managed to run away but was chased and raped again.
Justice Cannings asked him if he understood the charges; the man nodded “yes”.
Asked if he had committed the offence, he admitted saying, “Yes”.
Otariv had escaped from Beon prison after being jailed for life. He was recaptured and his case is set for Dec 7 for a separate pre-sentence report to be made at his counsel’s request.
