A CONVICTED murderer on the run for seven years has been re-arrested in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province.
Sospen Wai, 31, was serving life in jail when he fled from the Bihute Jail in January 2005.
Police said Wai was arrested at around 4.30pm last Wednesday at the Goroka main market.
Provincial police commander Augustine Wampe said the officers responded to a tip-off on Wai’s whereabouts.
Police detective Joe Mangre, Const Joe Kundane, Sgt Ludwig Asimani and Snr Const Brown Kafo worked out a plan to re-capture Wai.
He was taken to the Goroka police station and upon questioning admitted that he had escaped from Bihute jail in January 2005.
Police immediately transported him to the jail and handed him over to the Correctional Services officers.
Wai had been found guilty of murder by former Goroka resident national court judge Justice Nicholas Kirriwom and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002.
He shot and killed a 13-year-old Grade 8 male student from North Goroka Primary School at the Zokozoi River in 2002.
Wai is from Henegaru village in Lufa district, Eastern Highlands province. When he was arrested, he was married with two children.
Supt Wampe warned that all escapees would eventually be caught and returned to jail.
