A POLICEMAN in Popondetta is behind bars and faces a murder charge for allegedly causing the death of a suspect.
The policeman has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a suspect of an armed robbery last Friday.
Southern regional police commander assistant commissioner Jerry Frank said the behaviour of the policeman could not be tolerated in the force.
He has been taken off the payroll.
The deceased was allegedly involved in an armed robbery last Friday in which a supermarket was robbed and a Chinese employee stabbed.
Police caught three suspects and locked them up at the Popondetta police station.
Police said that some time later the rogue policeman arrived at the station, took suspect Thomas Wap out of the police station and shot him in the leg with an A2 assault rifle.
Wap was taken to the Popondetta General Hospital but died from loss of blood.
Frank said the Chinese stabbed victim was also recovering in a private hospital in Port Moresby.
“I will not tolerate such behaviour by any police personnel. He will be charged with wilful murder,” Frank said.
He said the Northern provincial police commander appropriate action by arresting the rogue policeman and  suspending him immediately with investigations continuing.
