A POLICE constable has been charged by the force’s Internal Affairs Directorate with assaulting a woman on the Magi Highway on April 10.
In total, four policemen from Central have been charged with various crimes, including murder, this year.
Directorate director Chief Supt Emil Alpha confirmed that the policeman was charged with one count of use of firearm, two counts of assault and one count of provoking a breach of peace under the Summary Offences Act.
He is being detained at the Boroko police station.
He is alleged to have on April 10, between 4pm and 4.30pm, used his gun to shoot the tyre of the woman’s car and then punched the woman and her husband who were in the car.
Chief Supt Alpha said the policeman also seized the keys of car and used it to scratch the woman’s face.
He also spat out a mouthful of betel nut onto her face.
“The husband went to his wife’s aid but two men who were with the PC used a baseball bat to threaten the man,” he added.
Chief Supt Alpha said the officer continued his assault by punching the woman several times on the face saying “you are a porn-star on social media! You are a prostitute (k-mums) of Waigani!”
When the woman asked for the key, the PC swore at her and threw the key into the tall grass along the highway.
The key was recovered after the officer and his accomplices left the scene.
National Capital District/Central commander Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anthony Wagambie Jr said the suspect was off duty.
“At the time of the incident, he was not on duty and was not using a police allocated vehicle,” ACP Wagambie Jr said.

  • It don’t matter if he on duty or not. He’s still a policemen. just like a nurse who is off duty is still a nurse

  • This truely an act of a rascal. Put him out for the public to give him the share of what he has done to the odinary citizen.

  • It doesn’t matter whether he’s off duty, not in police uniform, not in police vehicle and the excuse list goes on, the fact of the matter is, he’s a police officer. He took oath to become a public servant to serve the rights of the public and not to abuse the rights of people.

  • The Central Commander knows that a police constable is sworn in to be a policeman 24 hours every day. It is only administration that sees him work shifts.
