A POLICE officer in West New Britain has been charged with murder after shooting a man during a brawl.

The officer, from East New Britain, was alleged to have shot the 26-year-old man during a brawl on Feb 22 outside the Linos club outside Kimbe town.

Provincial police commander Samson Siguyaru said the man was from Goroka, Eastern Highlands but raised by Sepik settlers in Kimbe.

He said police had rushed the man to the Kimbe general hospital but he died on arrival.

After investigations, police charged the officer whose name had been withheld.

Siguyaru said there had been a lot of media reports about “heavy-handed tactics” by police in WNB but most officers were well-behaved and followed rules.

“They are disciplined. Very few of my officers who think they are super,  find themselves either in police cells or in the hospital,” he said.
