A policeman who was attacked by a group of drunks near a Port Moresby hotel on Dec 4 has died.
First Const Elmes Travertz died at the Port Moresby General Hospital last Saturday.
According to reports, he was the second policemen to be attacked in the capital this year.
The first was a Mobile Squad member who was attacked earlier this year at Manu Autoport.
Police said Travertz died from brain injuries 18 days after he and three other officers were attacked outside the Lamana Hotel by a mob.
Travertz suffered concussion after being hit with a rock.
He was with three Hohola-based policemen who answered a drunk and disorderly complaint when they were attacked by a rowdy mob.
Police said Travertz was armed with a police-issue rifle but the weapon was “snatched” from him during the attack.
Travertz was rushed to hospital and admitted at the ICU with serious head injuries.
Police later recovered Travertz’s firearm at Morata settlement and, after further investigations, a vehicle belonging to one of alleged assailants was impounded.
Police widened their investigations and the prime suspect in the attack was eventually arrested on Sunday, Dec 18, at Morata.
NCD and Central commander Fred Sheekiot said police had charged two men connected to the killing.
