A POLICE officer faces a jail term after being convicted of assault and unlawful use of firearms.
Bogia rural police station commander Sgt Adolf Sawaer was ordered by magistrate Malcolm Samala to pay K7,000 within two months to the two youths he shot. Failing that, he will serve three years and four months in
jail.
“This serves as a stern warning to police on the use of firearms,”  Samala said.
The court heard the offence was committed in Bogia, while Sawaer was the police station commander.
He shot two youths in separate incidents at Sepa and Ambu villages without giving any reasons.
When their parents enquired about the shooting after laying complaints, Sawaer assaulted them.
Maria Kiaro, mother of one of the youths, told the court she was hit by Sawaer, causing her to wet her pants.
Sawaer was said to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The court dismissed his argument of self-defence.
Sawaer is also under investigation by the police internal investigation unit.
