POLICE Constable (PC) Timot Kavanamur who was killed in the line of duty on Sunday was back in Port Moresby’s McGregor Special Services Division (SSD) barracks for his haus krai and state funeral.
PC Kavanamur’s body was escorted by Deputy Comm (Operations) (DCP) Donald Yamasombi and flown from Enga to the National Capital District yesterday afternoon.
Describing PC Kavanamur as a hero killed in action, DCP Yamasombi told policemen, officers, relatives and friends of the slain constable that men deployed for duty operations risked their lives for the people and country.
“PC Kavanamur is one such man who had sworn to serve this country faithfully and with dedication. It is such a loss to the force,” he said, adding that every policeman and officer are exposed to danger to ensure law and order, and to protect lives and properties.
PC Kavanamur, who was attached to Port Moresby’s Air Tactical Unit, was on duty in Enga’s Porgera mine area, clearing it of illegal miners when he was shot dead on Sunday.
The National yesterday quoted Police Comm David Manning as saying: “It is unfortunate that the life of such a fine young man who had more to offer this country has been cut short. May God comfort us all in this tragic hour.”
Comm Manning also responded to the death by urging the Government to impose the death penalty on all cop killers and that “fire will have to be fought with fire”.
The National also quoted Comm Manning as saying: “Legislators need to amend or enact appropriate laws to serve as a deterrent on such murderers.”
DCP Yamasombi said many policemen in the barracks were away on special operations duty but many colleagues described PC Kavanamur, 27, as a humble and committed policeman, from the training days until today.
PC Kavanamur graduated from Bomana police college on Sept 4, 2015, and joined the SSD until his untimely death.

  • Make the Death Penalty a law and do not give excuses by saying PNG is a Christian country it is but the murderers are not so just put them to death.
Churches cannot start crying out as always when you mention the Death Penalty Law the churches start jumping up & down. Of cause PNG is a Christian country but we still have to get rid of worthless animals who think life is Samting Nating.
Over to you people who are in authority to implement the Law and get on with getting rid of some of the animals who are on Death Row so that whoever is trying to be an animal can think twice, because right they know that they won’t put to death because our death penalty system is in their favor. What a big joke on the system.

  • Losing a young officer inline of duty is painful. I imagine losing relatives currently serving the force and share tears with you as I write. My heartfelt condolence to the immediate families for the loss of a young officer who took oath to serve our country. RIP my countryman. The loss has not come from an enemy battle field. The killings are happening within ourselves! Why are warlords targeting the Law enforcing agencies??? Tougher laws needed to reduce these killings. Government introduce Death Penalty!

  • So sad. A fine young men who had more to offer for the country has been been cut sort. Barbaric and animalistic killers must face full force of the law.

  • Very sad to loose such young energetic officers who have some substantial years to support the nation.
Condolences to immediate family, relatives and members of the PNGRC.

  • What action.will the Police Union take .? Come on Clemence Kanau and Police union. Do something!

  • To the murderers and their leaders:
He was not your enemy, why do you have to murder an olive leaf bearer from a place separated by a vast ocean who has just started life. We read and hear so much about your politicians fighting over leadership. What sort of leadership are you fighting for? Shame on you

  • I think the local have bring in the cullprit (kopkiller) to face the full force of the justice and if it’s to hang to death he or the have to face it.

  • I think the local have bring in the cullprit (kopkiller) to face the full force of the justice.

  • Where it this police Minister? What action will he take? Policeman lusim laif ya? The Government has to take this matter seriously. Government has to impose death penalty to cop killers.
A very young man who’s life was cut short in the line of duty.

Rest in peace my brother Timo, justice will prevail. Heartfelt condolences to his family.

  • This has to somehow stop. Innocent lives falling as victims is not good enough. This is a young life taken but lots of others work there leave families and go out. We need to stand up as a nation and fight what is not right for our citizen workers.

  • Condolence to his family, that culprit must be apprehended and punish to life years or death

  • Police should invest in bullet proof vests, and other protective gear for such high risk deployments… too often, our men go out with only their uniforms and a gun to such hostile environments…
Officer’s safety is paramount at situations such as these..

  • If government were to implement the death penalty for cold blooded killers then it should be right across the board, not only for cop killers. a maximum life imprisonment is also an option BUT with no rehabilitation of our prisons with no new building facilitate in sight for the near future, imprisonement will add to more overcrowding and more prison breaks. MAKE IT SIMPLE, IMPOSE DEATH PENALTY AND RID SOCIETY OF THIS PREDICAMENT.

  • Impose death penalty on anyone who takes a life. not only on this currently situation(cop killers), but an ordinary PNG citizen too who takes a life of another must face this fate.
For the future of good of PNG.
