THE body of a man who went missing in the Mamba River in Sohe, Northern, has been recovered and was buried last Sunday, according to police in Popondetta.
Acting police commander Snr Insp Sailas Tojune told The National that a complaint was registered with the police three days after the man, Justus Evari, was reported missing.
Snr Insp Tojune said Evari was a community-based constable and, according to unconfirmed reports, he was panning for gold in the river when he went missing.
According to reports from close friends in Popondetta, Evari and some other men had been panning for gold in the Mamba River for some time.
It was reported that he and his son were floating on a makeshift raft along the river when it capsized.
His son managed to swim ashore and raised the alarm and that’s when the matter was reported to police.
It is understood that following the recent heavy rains, Evari’s body was swept by the flood downstream to almost reaching the sea when it was found among the debris after 21 days of searching.
