POLICE in every province must take over the responsibilities of liquor licensing boards, an alcohol abuse symposium in Lae, Morobe, heard last week.
Chief Sgt Dick Tambua said that was the only way to effectively control the alcohol market and cut down on the number of alcohol abuse victims.
Tambua said he made the suggestion because he had spent many years handling the injured and the dead on the Highlands Highway and dealing with many small liquor dealers.
“I suggest the office of provincial police Commander should have the powers of the liquor licensing board.
“Because the police will make sure the operators do not abuse their licence,” he said.
“There should be full and proper inspections before issuing licences,” he said.
Tombua said having control over that area would contribute positively in curbing alcohol abuse.
