Cops bash up night clubbers after party
The National – Monday, March 14, 2011
ABOUT four people were alleged to have been assaulted by drunken policemen outside a nightclub in Port Moresby in the early hours of Saturday.
The policemen, who were in a white 10-seater police vehicle, went on a rampage and assaulted people near the Penthouse nightclub premises, while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
NCD Chief of operations Jim Namora confirmed the incident being reported to the Boroko police station.
According to eye-witnesses, two young men and a woman were injured as a result of the police beating and were admitted to the Port Moresby General Hospital.
An old woman was also injured by a policeman who allegedly used a softball bat to hit her.
The beatings took place at between 6am and 7am near the night club.
An eye-witness Timothy Walis claimed the police, without reason, told the people to vacate the club premises and started beating people who were waiting for taxi to go home after the night-out partying.
Walis said one of those injured was a female third-year UPNG student.
She received serious wounds to her head, while two other boys were treated for several cuts to their bodies and one suffered a broken ankle.
“One of the boys nearly died due to loss of blood but his friends rushed him to the hospital and was saved,” Walis claimed.
He said police were supposed to carry out their duties to protect lives and properties.
However, he said, in this case these ones seemed to have been drinking in a police-issued vehicle and then beating up people with no reason.
Walis appealled to acting police commissioner Tony Wagambie to investigate the matter and punish those police officers as they were a disgrace to the police force in the country.
