The National, Thursday July 24th, 2014
POLICE in Jiwaka have issued a stern warning to youths and the public to behave and help maintain cleanliness and peace as police, community leaders and business houses are taking the lead in a major cleanathon programmein the province.
The cleanathon programme started early this month in all markets and towns in Jiwaka.
It begins at the Minj Rot Bung market then to Kudjip and on Tuesday a major one took place in Banz town.
Provincial police commander Supt Joseph Tondop said this programme is to change the mindset of the people so that they can take ownership of development taking place in the province.
He said all business houses have sacrificed to open for half day to help in the drive.
Tondop said because there is no proper markets where people can sell their garden food, they have managed to clean the existing ones at Minj Rot Bung, Kudjip and Banz.
“We, the people of Jiwaka, must have pride in our business houses, markets and other activities to grow our local economy,” Tondop said.
“We must get involved in small business activities and start to develop our lives and our living standards.”
He said while the place is clean and people are starting to change their mindsets, law and order must be maintained.
Tondop said police would be out in full force to deal with anyone who broke the law.
“I do want to see anyone drinking alcohol in public places, consuming marijuana or do any silly things,” he said.
“I want us to respect our province and business houses because they are ones paying tax and creating job opportunity for our people.
“It is not the work of police, community leaders or business houses alone but it needs the support from everyone to help the province grow.”
Tondop thanked people who had contributed to the programme and urged others to join because this would enhance the province’s image.
