HELA police and authorities yesterday made peace with relatives of the policeman killed in Tari on Tuesday and promised to bring the killer to justice.
Assistance Police Commissioner (Eastern End) Nema Mondiai told The National that on Wednesday locals blocked the road at Wara Simbu to check vehicles travelling from Jiwaka and Goroka for Hela people.
“Today Hela police commander Chief Insp Teddy Agwi and the provincial administrator addressed the relatives of the dead officer and promised to investigate the killing and the road block was removed,” Mondiai said.
Chimbu police commander Insp Jacob Singura addressed the locals on Wednesday but they refused to remove their road block until they saw the Hela authorities.
A relative of the late Sgt David Hale, who did not wish to be named, said relatives of a Chimbu policeman killed during the 2017 elections in Enga also blocked the Chuave section of the Highlands Highway.
Chimbu administrator Michael Temai said Hela and Southern Highlands students at a teachers college in the province were attacked.
“People took advantage of the situation and attacked the students but school administrator and community leaders stopped the fight.”
