GOLDEN Valley Gold Buyers in Wau, Bulolo, Morobe, lost K80,000 worth of gold and cash in a robbery last Saturday, police say.
Morobe rural commander Chief Insp John Daviaga said five robbers held up the owner/manager of the company at gunpoint between 2am and 3am and led him into the company’s safe where they grabbed K20,000 in cash and K60,000 worth of gold. Chief Insp Daviaga said the public in Wau knew who were involved, but were not coming forward with information to help police.
Police are trying to identify the suspects, he said.
He said during the robbery, at least another five of the gang went to the company’s premises while five held up the owner.
Other gang members were on the lookout outside.
“Law and order is an issue here and the public, business houses and government agencies need to assist police to minimise it.”
He said police could not work effectively without proper police cells, a vehicle and stationery.
“Four of the policemen serving in Wau will retire from the force next month. Security to the people and their properties should be the priority and should be managed well on the ground in order that any development taking place will last,” he said.
“If police presence is not effective, people could not enjoy those developments.”
Chief Insp Daviaga said Wau also needed a permanent resident magistrate.
